Program Description
This position exists to provide substance abuse counseling to program Clients. Counselors interact with clients on a day-to-day basis providing individual and group counseling, as well as engaging in rehabilitation activities from time-to-time. The Journey Counselor is responsible for the delivery of face-to-face services to program participants. Counselors work directly with assigned participants to develop treatment plans and evaluation the progress in achieving action-oriented plan goals. Counselors also work with the participant’s family to create a support network for the participant’s return to the community. All staff positions require CDC access must meet security requirements for admission to required CDC institutions. Eligibility for employment in MHS programs requires satisfactory criminal background clearance including conviction records. MHS is a Drug-Free Workplace; therefore all staff must comply with Drug-Free Workplace requirements regarding alcohol and drug use. MHS performs post-offer substance abuse testing on all employees.

  • Maintain a Caseload 
  • Delivers Substance Abuse Case Managements Services 
  • Wrap Around Services 
  • Attend Treatment Meetings with Community Based Provider and Partners 
  • Assists in Community Placement of Participants 
  • Utilizes Logical Problem Solving Techniques in Collaboration with SASCA Partners 
  • Demonstrates Interest and Growth in Specialty Area by Attending Relevant Workshops, Seminars and Classes 
  • Attend Supervision with Program Manager 
  • Integrates the Clinical Concept with Sound Theoretical and Practical Applications of Rehabilitative and Individual Group and Milieu Counseling Principles 
  • Complies with all MHS and Program Rules, Policies and Procedures Including HIPAA

Education and Experience Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • AOD Certification
  • 2 years minimum experience providing substance counseling, treatment and recovery services to the criminal
  • justice population
