How do I Become a Volunteer?
Application: The first step in becoming a volunteer with Mental Health Systems is to complete a volunteer application. Please contact the Volunteer Coordinator to receive an application.
Interview: All volunteers will go through an interview with our Volunteer Coordinator. The interview will take about 30 minutes. It is used to discuss your volunteer interests as well as our programs and volunteer opportunities, so that we can find a great match for you.
Screenings: All volunteers (except Level 1 volunteers) will complete the following screenings and must have:
- Dept. of Justice and FBI background checks
- A Clear Tuberculosis (TB) test
- A Clean Drug test
- Clean Driving record checks
In addition, there will be 2 Personal Reference checks.
**All of the required screenings are paid for by MHS**
Placement: After the Volunteer Coordinator receives your screening results, you will be able to start volunteering and making a difference in the lives of children, youth and adults!
MHS relies heavily on volunteers and we could not be as successful without the help and support of people like you.

Levels of Volunteering
Level 1:
This level volunteer helps us run events and large community projects and is not in direct contact with clients. Possible assignments might include event registration, weekend projects, painting, etc. Volunteers at this level have less screening because they do not interact with clients.
Level 2:
This level of volunteer has limited interaction with clients. Possible assignments might include tasks such as reading books to kids, front desk assistance at one of our recovery homes, kitchen help, teaching our clients gardening skills, general office support at our home office or one of our program sites, etc. A volunteer position at this level requires full screening since they have direct, supervised contact with clients.
Level 3:
This level of volunteer has full interaction with clients. Examples of some roles that might be filled at this level are dentists, therapists, mentors, etc. This level of volunteer requires full screening plus an additional interview at the volunteer site with the program manager.
Give the gift of yourself, your time, your effort, and discover
the benefits of volunteering.

Other people may be there to help us, teach us, guide us along our path, but the lesson to be learned is always ours.
